Hyaluronic Acid: Worth the Hype?

Hyped up songs, hyped up Netflix shows, hyped up skincare ingredients- we know it’s a lot to keep up with. That’s why we did the deep dive on all things Hyaluronic Acid, so you don’t have to. Leggo!

What do fashion and Hyaluronic Acid (HA) have in common?

Fashion trends… the viscous cycle: One day the trend is featured in WeWoreWhat, the next it’s part of E!’s news worst dressed. It’s often said that everything comes back into style eventually: tie-dye shirts, neon, bike shorts, Bermuda shorts, animal prints… these 1990’s trends are all making a comeback in 2019! They’re back, baby. The same can be said for Hyaluronic Acid (HA).

Why this comeback of HA? Research and innovative technology, obvi. Historically, when skincare companies included hyaluronic acid in their products, it was with the intent to provide “lip” service with promises of plumping and hydration in a bottle. What they left out of their claims and promises though, was that the hyaluronic acid molecule is way too large to penetrate the skin. The best analogy that I can come up with is: trying to force a softball into a golf ball sized cup (ow).

Sooo…What is it and what does it do?

Hyaluronic acid is an abundant, naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan or GAG’s (terrifying word, but all the cool kids call it GAG’s) and forms one of the key components of connective tissue. The deeper layers of skin have three crucial components: collagen, elastin, and GAG’s. These three components form the bulk of an important support system called the Extracellular Matrix (ECM).

GAG’s are water-binding substances. It’s an important structural molecule found both in our epidermis (outer layer of skin) and dermis (the second layer of skin) with most of it living in the extracellular matrix of the dermis. They provide hydration from within, support metabolic processes, prevent transempidermal water loss (TEWL) from the skin, which promotes proper function of the skin barrier. HA also protects against free radical and UV damage. Uhm, what doesn’t it do?

Wait! There’s more... Hyaluronic Acid also binds up to 1000 times its weight in water, the main reason it’s used in skincare products! This basically means that it can ultra-hydrate the skin by drawing and holding water molecules on the skin to keep it hydrated. As we age, our body’s natural production of hyaluronic acid slows down (the ultimate goal is to Benjamin Button life, right??) It’s no wonder then that hyaluronic acid has become a key ingredient in crèmes, gels and serums across beauty brands.

To Understand the Future Let’s Go Back in Time...*rewind*

  • Early 1960’s, HA-based preparations were developed for treating skin lesions
  • Along come the 1980’s with the introduction of hyaluronic acid extensively used during certain eye surgeries including cataract extraction. The 1980’s also represented the height of HA joint injections.
  • By the 1990’s, hyaluronic acid found its way into the beauty industry.  While the first HA-based dermal filler (a dermal filler is an injectable commonly used for filling in wrinkles or plumping lips) was developed in 1989, it’s not until 2003 that dermal filler products are approved for use for the treatment of facial wrinkles and 2004 for lip plumping. What about HA in topical skincare, you ask...? While there is no clear answer here, it’s not until the late 1980’s and early 1990’s that HA derivatives entered the scene.

Size Does Matter ;)

High molecular weight hyaluronic acid molecules are larger (remember- softball in golf cup). These molecules form a “film” and sit on the uppermost layers of the skin grabbing moisture from the air to promote hydration. Unfortunately, these molecules behave like frenemies; they feel hydrating at first, but ultimately dehydrate the skin by also drawing up any moisture available within the skin.

Super excited that with new tech advancements, scientists created lower molecular weights of hyaluronic acid molecules making them into fragments to penetrate the skin easier because of their smaller sizes.  Now we have improved AND long-lasting penetration into the skin.

*Alert- NEW Skin Ingredient Geek Out*

HYALURONIX™ Multi-Molecular Hyaluronic Acid is found in DOUBLE MAJOR® Hyaluronic Acid Gel Moisturizer – dyk that Hyaluronic Acid is found in almost every cell of our body and binds 1,000 times its weight in water at the cellular level? The problem is that as we age, our body produces less and less. HYALURONIX™ replenishes the skin by delivering three different molecular weights of HA. Low Molecular Weight, under 1 million daltons, to work at the surface of the skin, Super Low Molecular Weight, under 100,000 daltons, to absorb lower in to the skin, and Ultra Low Molecular Weight, under 10,000 daltons, to go deep within the lower layers of the skin.

Fashion trends match beauty trends with the addition of new technology!

It’s the 1990’s all over again only better when it comes to skincare ingredients.

Hyaluronix®, found in DOUBLE MAJOR® Hyaluronic Acid Gel Moisturizer, is a multi-molecular hyaluronic acid skincare ingredient.  Three low molecular weights of HA are combined with ceramides, glucosamine and ginger to boost HA levels in the skin. The result, 198% HA levels in the epidermis and 259% in the dermal layer, which is a fancy way of saying uber-hydration. Hyaluronic Acid that’s actually worth the hype.

We know you don’t like to waste your time (or cash money) on unnecessary trends, so we got you on this must-have ingredient. We’re all about Hyaluronic Acid.

Grab yourself a bottle of DOUBLE MAJOR® Hyaluronic Acid Gel Moisturizer to give your skin a gulp of water for maximum hydration. This double duty, lightweight, oil-free hydra gel helps strengthen skin’s own natural moisture balance using lush moisturizers and super moisture-binding skin replenishers for all-day comfort, radiance, and hydration.
